SPEED AND AGILITY TRAINING: IS IT REALLY NEEDED IN SPORTS?
Speed is hands down the most coveted athletic tool in all of sports. If you think about it, nearly every sport has changed drastically over the past several decades. The games of baseball and softball have evolved to the point that speed is no longer viewed as a unique advantage. Speed is now a requirement for every team and for all players who strive to play at the highest levels.
In terms of offense, speed and agility get an athlete from point A to point B. These qualities allow the athlete to advance and eventually score. Defensively, these qualities are important for getting to the ball and being able to make the play. To an extent, these qualities also help to determine who is going to be successful in various positions.
Just like in the NFL, a player’s professional potential is often predetermined by scouts – based solely on speed, agility, and size. Everybody must have top-level speed in order to excel within his or her respective sport.
At Bon Secours Sports Performance, our speed training emphasizes proper sprint mechanics, intense plyometrics, dynamic stretching, correcting muscle imbalances, explosive strength training, single-leg strength training, resistance sprinting, over-speed training, and foot speed and agility drills.
Todayâs professional and Olympic athletes utilize these same training programs. Speed and agility program participants will get faster, quicker, more agile, and more efficient in their movements.
We openly acknowledge that we canât take slow players and turn them into world-class sprinters; it doesnât work that way with speed.
However, we can turn average speed into good speed, good speed into great speed, and great speed into world-class speed. When we initially consult with our athletes we will establish lofty but attainable goals for what can be accomplished. Every athlete is different, and we target their training specifically to get them to the highest level of performance possible.
