Augie Garrido Explains The Art Of Bunting
Augie Garrido may have been best known for his time as head baseball coach at the University of Texas. In all, Garrido’s teams won five national titles (1979, 1984, 1995, 2002, 2005). Garrido compiled a collegiate record of 1,975–951–9, retiring in 2016 as the coach with the most wins in college baseball history.
Augie Garrido was also possibly the best at teaching the art of bunting. A recent Collegiate Baseball News article on bunting cited Coach Garrido and his sage advice for bunting.
Here are my three main takeaways from the article:
- Everyone should learn how to bunt. It does not matter what number you hit in the line-up, you may be called on one day to lay one down to move a runner or squeeze the tying or winning run in. Make it part of your routine every hitting practice.
- If you are fast, bunting will be another great tool to have at your disposal. As Coach Garrido said in the article, most infielders don’t throw well coming in on a ball- you force the defense to rush, and when they rush, errors occur. This is especially true with younger players.
- Bunting can be a powerful run manufacturing tool if taught and practiced properly.
