Sean Ryan is currently head coach of the 2024 Mid Atlantic Orioles. He has led Benedictine to the Virginia Independent Schools state playoffs in 13 of his 15 years, including two VISAA State Championship runs in 2010 and 2017.
Since 2009, the Cadets have gone 192-77 (.714) with four trips to the state title game and two state championships.
In 15 seasons at Benedictine, Ryan has compiled a record of 259-131 (.664); he previously led the program at Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School for two seasons (9-29). Forty-five of his players have gone on to play baseball in college.
Ryan was a three-year starter at third base and two-time captain under Coach Ron Atkins at the University of Richmond. He once tied a school record with seven RBI in a game against Radford and was a key contributor to a Spiders team that set a then-school record with 43 wins and reached the NCAA Tournament in 1995. In 164 career games, Ryan totaled 165 hits, battling just under .300 and driving in more than 85 runs in his career. He also was named a Colonial Athletic Association Scholar Athlete for 1995-96.
A former sportswriter with The Richmond Times-Dispatch and sports marketer with Tuff Stuff Publications, Ryan has spent 15 years at public relations firm The Hodges Partnership in Richmond’s Shockoe Bottom. A native of Atlanta, he also is the co-founder and editor of CollegeBaseballInsider.com, among the most comprehensive college baseball websites in the country. In 2015 he was a college baseball contributor to The Sporting News.
