At Tuckahoe Sports, the connection between baseball and life is intertwined. Many of our players spend considerable amount of time at the facility for practice and individual training. Outside of the facility, our players face the same issues many kids and teenagers see every day. The dedication to sports and success in life are one in the same for our players. Giving them opportunities to grow outside of baseball is a role our staff and coaches work on every day. This led to our most recent Leadership Series speaker, Scott Berger!
This February, Coach/Lieutenant Berger, a seasoned veteran coach of TSI/TLL and 31-year member of Henrico City Law Enforcement, presented our members with “Baseball Develops Character” presentation. The focus was to impart information that would help set up the boys for success by avoiding negative decisions that could ultimately impact their future. The session was divided by age groups and addressed those topics that affect most as they travel thru elementary, middle, and high school.
During his time in the Police Force, Coach Berger has seen hundreds of situations that resulted in a teen hurting the opportunity ahead of them. The presentation focused on giving our players real life examples of the topics discussed. Giving them a perspective on how one small decision can completely change the future they are working to build.
The presentation for 9- to 12-year-olds focused on bullying, leading by example, dealing with peer pressure, and how to build a winning mindset. Coach Berger got many children to interact with the presentation and share situation they have been through. Both kids and parents enjoyed the presentation as it focused on the building blocks of success on and off the field.
Middle and High schoolers enjoyed a more serious talk that addressed a plethora of topics many of them will be confronted with as they continue to grow up. Many of these players strive to play baseball at the collegiate level meaning the decisions they make in everyday life will directly impact the school they attend. By connecting the issues discussed with players baseball dreams, Coach Berger was able to convey the seriousness of the topics discussed. A large portion of the presentation focused on “Drive to Stay Alive”, which gave players an in depth look at eh dangers associated with getting behind the wheel.
Coach Berger’s “Baseball Develops Character” was session #4 in TSI’s 2024 Leadership Series.
We thank Coach for his time and dedication to making a difference in our community and hope to host again in the future!
